1949 AL Game: Was. @ NY Byrne Throws a Gem

  Tommy Byrne pitched his finest game of the season today while the New York Yankees defeated the Washington Senators 6-0. Byrne lost a no-hitter in the 8th inning but completed the game for his 2nd shutout of the year. There have been 7 1-hitters in the AL this season but 0 no-hitters.

Tommy Byrne carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the New York Yankees
defeated the Washington Senators 6 to 0 at Yankee Stadium.
 
Byrne(12-6) dominated Washington hitters.  He allowed just 1 hit and 5 walks
in 9 innings dropping his ERA from 3.61 to 3.39.  The left-handed Byrne lost
a no-hitter when Eddie Robinson singled with nobody out in the 8th inning.
New York had a total of 8 hits for the game.  
 
Mickey Harris(10-5) was the losing pitcher.  Casey Stengel was very impressed
with his pitcher, Byrne, 'He had unusually good pitch placement this
afternoon.  It was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I
sat'
