August 19, 1949

It was a slugfest in NY tonight as the Philadelphia A's outscored the Yankees 17-10. New York launched 5 homeruns in the game, 3 by Joe DiMaggio, but it wasn't enough to defeat the A's. Philadelphia put 11 runs on the scoreboard in the 1st inning, but the Yankees battled back throughout the game and the score was 12-10 heading into the 9th inning. That's when Philadelphia scored 4 more runs to put the game away.

In a wild and wooly game at Yankee Stadium, the Philadelphia Athletics finally
topped the New York Yankees by the score of 17 to 10 in.

Philadelphia wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they
pummeled New York for 11 runs on 7 hits. The big moment was provided by Sam
Chapman who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he doubled with
all three runners coming home. Philadelphia kept the scorekeepers busy in
the 1st inning which saw them plate 11 runs on 7 hits and the 9th inning
which saw them plate 4 runs on 3 hits. Philadelphia totaled 15 hits on the
night.

Bubba Harris(4-6) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Bob
Porterfield(4-3) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in
1/3 of an inning.

1949 AL Standings and League Leaders

August 10, 1949

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are taking turns at the top of the AL. After today's games, it's the Red Sox in 1st place. The Cleveland Indians are right behind both of them. My Detroit Tigers are currently in a downward spiral and find themselves 10 GB.
Boston's Ted Williams is crushing the ball right now, and if the season ended today he would be a Triple Crown winner. William's teammate Mel Parnell is the top pitcher in the league with 17 Wins and a 2.33 ERA.

1949 AL Game: NY @ Bsn.

August 10, 1949

The ball was flying out of the park today. After the NY Yankees won the 1st game of this 3 game series in a tight pitching dual, the Boston Red Sox flexed their muscles and came from behind to take today's game in 11 innings, 11-10.  Boston scored 3 runs in the 8th inning and 3 more in the 9th to send the game into extra innings. Joe DiMaggio hit 2 homeruns for New York but Boston got back-to-back homers from Ted Williams (his 2nd of the game) and Vern Stephens in the 8th inning, and a 3 run bomb from Bobby Doer in the 9th. The Red Sox won the contest in the 11th when Williams drove in Johnny Pesky from 3rd. Joe Page was the victim of Boston's late onslaught, getting a BS and the Loss. Johnnie Wittig got the Win in relief with 3 scoreless innings pitched.
