1949 AL Game Stories

September 5, 1949

 New York's Vic Raschi and Boston's Mel Parnell both became MLB's first 20 Game Winners in games played today. Parnell had the better outing, going the distance in Boston's 7-3 victory over the Washington Senators. Raschi went 7 innings, allowing 6 runs, while New York held on to defeat the Philadelphia Athletics 10-9.

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Athletics locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Shibe Park.  The final score was the New York Yankees 10, the
Philadelphia Athletics 9.
 
Vic Raschi(20-7) pitched okay, well enough for the win.  He went 7 innings
allowing 9 hits and 4 walks.  Philadelphia had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short.  
 
Lou Brissie(11-9) was charged with the loss.  He was touched for 11 hits and 5
walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Mel Parnell completed the game without help from the bullpen and Vern Stephens
collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat as the dominant Boston Red Sox
rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Washington Senators, 7 to
3.
 
Boston had the winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 2 hits.
The big moment was provided by Stephens who came through for the home fans
when he launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun.
Neither team was able to score until the 6th inning.  
 
The win went to Parnell(20-5) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Julio
Gonzalez(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning
allowing 2 hits and 3 walks.
