1949 AL Game and Standings

September 24, 1949

With only 8 games left in the 1949 season, and 5 versus each other, the 1st place New York Yankees squared off for the first of 2 games in Boston against the 2nd place Red Sox.  Boston's Ellis Kinder pitched a beauty of a game today, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees 3-1. New York sorely missed the injured Joe DiMaggio in the lineup. Only Tommy Henrich was able to figure out Kinder's excellent stuff when he hit his 32nd homer of the season in the 8th inning for New York's only run of the game. The Red Sox moved within 1 game of New York with the victory.
