1949 AL Game Stories and Standings: New York Wins the Pennant!

September 30,1949

  A Boston loss in Washington, combined with a New York win at home vs. Philadelphia resulted in the New York Yankees winning the AL Pennant! Shortly after the Red Sox lost a close game against the Senators, the Yankees game against the Phillies went to extra innings. Knowing a victory would give them the Pennant, the Yankee fans were on the edge of their seats. Finally, September rookie call-up Jim Delsing led off the bottom of the 11 inning with his 1st major league homerun. A huge on field celebration ensued.

The Washington Senators and the Boston Red Sox locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Griffith Stadium.  The final score was the Washington
Senators 5, the Boston Red Sox 4.
 
The game was won by Washington with a run in the bottom of the 8th inning.
After an out was recorded, Jake Early drew a walk.  Joe Haynes stepped into
the batter's box and he lined a base-hit.  Eddie Yost then drew a walk to
load the bases.  One out later, Bud Stewart came to the plate and drew a walk
scoring the run.  Boston tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.  
 
The victory went to Haynes(4-8) who went 3 innings, allowing no runs. Jack
Kramer(7-7) was the loser.  He was unable to control the Washington offense
and allowed 10 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Yogi Berra blasted 2 homeruns and Eddie Lopat reeled off a total of 10
strikeouts as the New York Yankees outscored the Philadelphia Athletics in 11
innings 3 to 2.
 
The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings.  New York won it in the
11th inning.  Jim Delsing delivered a solo blast giving New York the victory
and sending the 39,481 home-town fans home happy.  New York had only 6 hits
for the afternoon.  
 
The win went to Joe Page(11-7) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Bubba
Harris(5-8) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 1 hit and no
walks without retiring a batter.
