1949 AL Game and Standings

September 26, 1949

 After playing 2 games in Boston, the Red Sox and Yankees traveled to New York for a makeup game that had been postponed on September 8th. Boston jumped out in front in the 1st inning, scoring 5 runs and chasing New York starter Tommy Byrne. Both teams were sloppy on the field resulting in 8 unearned runs scored. Boston won the game 8-5 and moved within 1 game of New York with 5 games left to play.

In an entertaining game at Yankee Stadium the final score was the Boston Red
Sox 8, the New York Yankees 5.
 
Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 5
runs on 3 hits.  Boston had a total of 11 hits for the game.  
 
The win went to Mickey McDermott(5-4) who allowed 5 runs in 7 innings. Walt
Masterson recorded his 4th save.  Tommy Byrne(16-8) took the loss.  He
pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 3 hits and 3 walks.
