As the pennant race in the AL nears the end of the season, every game becomes so much more important. While my Detroit Tigers have been a bit of a disappointment, stuck in 4th place and under performing their actual 1949 record, they do have a chance to influence the race. Today, the Tigers were in Boston for a game against the 1st place Red Sox. Detroit got an excellent performance from starter Art Houtteman and came away with a 4-2 victory in a well played game. After tomorrow's game in Boston, Detroit has 2 games against New York and finish the season with 6 games against Cleveland. With New York being idle today, the Yankees moved 1/2 game ahead of Boston.

Art Houtteman pitched a complete game as the Detroit Tigers bested the Boston
Red Sox 4 to 2 at Fenway Park.
Houtteman(10-10) delivered a fine performance for Detroit. He went 9 innings
and surrended up 9 hits and 1 walk. Boston made it exciting in the 9th, but
they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Jack Kramer(7-6) was hit with the loss. Joe McCarthy was subdued after the
ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more
fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks
me off!'
