1949 NL Independence Day Games

July 4, 1949

 It's the 4th of July and there were a slate of doubleheaders played in the NL today. In all 4 sets of doubleheaders, one team swept both games: The New York Giants disappointed the hometown Boston Braves' fans by narrowly winning both of their games 4-2 and 3-2. The smoking hot 1st place Brooklyn Dodgers eeked out a win in both of their games against the 2nd place Philadelphia Phillies by the identical score of 5-4. The Pittsburgh Pirates won both games in Cincinnati 3-2 and 7-2. The St. Louis Cardinals took 2 against the Chicago Cubs 3-2 and 11-0.

Larry Jansen went the distance at Braves Field where the New York Giants beat
the Boston Braves 4 to 2.
 
New York scored 2 runs in the decisive 6th inning.  Sid Gordon led off the
inning for New York when he drew a walk.  After an out was recorded, Ray
Mueller came up and he slapped a single.  Bill Voiselle then fired a sharp
breaking ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher.  In any event, it got by
him and was ruled a passed ball which plated a run.  Buddy Kerr followed and
he laced a base-hit.  Jansen came up to bat and worked the squeeze play to
perfection scoring the final run of the inning.  New York had a total of 9
hits for the game.  
 
The victory went to Jansen(8-7) who went the distance allowing 2 runs.
Voiselle(2-6) took the loss.  He allowed 8 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.
 
NEW YORK AT BOSTON

Ray Mueller had 2 base hits as the New York Giants defeated the Boston Braves
3 to 2 at Braves Field.
 
New York brought 2 runs across the plate in the 5th inning with the help of 4
hits.  It was enough scoring to earn the victory.  New York banged out 7 hits
on the afternoon.  
 
The winning pitcher was Clint Hartung(7-7) who allowed 2 runs in 5 innings.
Red Webb was credited with his 2nd save.  The losing pitcher was Glenn
Elliott(1-4).  
 
New York remained hot, improving their record to 40-32. They now have a record
of 8-2 in recent days.  Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Boston is
2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 35-40.
 
PHILADELPHIA AT BROOKLYN

Preacher Roe allowed Burt Shotton to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
at Ebbets Field as the phenomenal Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Philadelphia
Phillies 5 to 4.
 
Billy Cox had a good day at the plate.  He doubled in the 1st inning, hit a
bases-empty home run in the 3rd inning and smacked a single bringing in two
baserunners in the 4th inning.  Brooklyn finished with 12 hits in the
victory.  
 
The victory was credited to Roe(10-1) who went the distance, allowing 4 runs.
The loss was charged to Curt Simmons(2-7).  He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits
and 2 walks in 7 innings.  
 
 
PHILADELPHIA AT BROOKLYN

Don Newcombe completed the game without help from the bullpen and Gil Hodges
collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as the Brooklyn Dodgers bested the
Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 4 at Ebbets Field.
 
In the bottom of the 5th inning Brooklyn scored 2 runs.  Philadelphia made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
 
The win went to Newcombe(7-3) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Jocko
Thompson(0-3) suffered the loss.  He gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 5 and 1/3
innings.  
 
Burt Shotton was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good
contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning
these tight ones! It was just our day - no doubt about it!'
 
PITTSBURGH AT CINCINNATI

Wally Westlake hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI at Crosley Field where the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 3 to
2.
 
Pittsburgh came up with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning.  The big moment
was provided by Westlake who quieted the home crowd when he cleared the
fences for a two-run home run.  Cincinnati had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short.  
 
Cliff Chambers(6-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Murry Dickson recorded the save, his 3rd.  Howie Fox(5-6)
was the loser.  He gave up 7 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.  
 
'He gutted it out' Billy Meyer said of Chambers.  'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'
 
PITTSBURGH AT CINCINNATI

Bill Werle tossed a complete game at Crosley Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 7 to 2.
 
Werle(4-7) pitched a fine game.  He went 9 innings surrendering 10 hits and 2
walks dropping his ERA from 5.28 to 4.97.  Both teams finished the game with
10 hits.  
 
Ewell Blackwell(3-5) was given the loss.  He pitched 7 innings and surrendered
8 hits and 5 walks.
 
ST. LOUIS AT CHICAGO

9,656 fans were treated to a fine game at Wrigley Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The St. Louis Cardinals won by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
 
St. Louis scored all of the necessary runs in the 5th inning when they scored
3 runs on 4 hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Stan Musial who
helped quiet the crowd when he tripled scoring two baserunners.  Both teams
ended up with 10 hits on the afternoon.  
 
The win went to Max Lanier(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Lanier got relief help from Ted Wilks who gained credit for his 9th save.
Johnny Schmitz(1-12) suffered the loss.  
 
St. Louis continued their winnings ways improving their record to 41-30.  They
are 9-1 in their last ten games.  Chicago has a record of 18-54, worst in the
league after the loss.
 
ST. LOUIS AT CHICAGO

In a one-sided affair the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals batters pounded the
woeful Chicago Cubs pitchers for 11 runs while Al Brazle(7-5), with relief
help from Bill Reeder, blanked Chicago.
 
Enos Slaughter enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He ripped a base-hit bringing
in a run in the 6th inning, slapped a one-base hit bringing in two
baserunners in the 6th inning and cracked a solo homerun in the 8th inning.
St. Louis finished with 10 hits while Chicago ended up with 6.  
 
The losing pitcher was Bob Chipman(0-5).  He gave up 6 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings of work.  In another of a string of victories, St. Louis extended
their winning streak to 7 games.
