1949 NL Game: St. Louis @ Pittsburgh

July 7, 1949

  It took 11 innings but the red hot St. Louis Cardinals won their 10th game in a row by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4. Fred Martin (pictured) came on in relief of Gerry Staley in the 7th inning for St. Louis and he held the Pirates scoreless on 2 hits until his team pulled out a victory in the 11th. The Cardinals moved into 2nd place in the NL with the win.

Fred Martin had an impressive outing as the sizzling St. Louis Cardinals
outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings 5 to 4.
 
The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings.  St. Louis came out on
top in the 11th inning.  After two outs Del Rice drew a walk.  Martin was
next and he ripped a base-knock.  Red Schoendienst then ripped a one-base hit
scoring the run.  St. Louis finished with 8 hits in the victory.  
 
The win was credited to Martin(1-0) who went 5 innings allowing no runs. Murry
Dickson(3-6) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He allowed 1 run and 3 hits
in 3 and 2/3 innings.
