1949 AL Game: Det. @ NY

June 26, 1949

The Detroit Tigers went into New York for a 5 game series hoping to close the gap with the 1st place Yankees. Tommy Henrich (pictured) had other ideas though. After splitting the first 4 games of the series, Henrich made sure New York took the rubber game by continuing his assault on Tiger pitching he'd had throughout the first 4 games. In the series finale, Henrich clubbed 2 homeruns and had 8 RBI to lead the Yankees to a 10-4 victory. Vic Raschi earned his AL leading 12th Win of the season. For the series, Henrich was 12 for 21 with 5 homeruns and 17 RBI.

Tommy Henrich slammed 2 homeruns and had 8 RBI and Vic Raschi tossed a fine 3
hitter as the New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 10
to 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Henrich was really 'in the zone'. He lost the ball over the fence for three
runs in the 1st inning, doubled which scored a run in the 3rd inning, blasted
a two-run home run in the 4th inning and doubled plating two runs in the 8th
inning. New York had a total of 15 hits for the game.

Raschi(12-2), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Marv
Grissom(0-4) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by New York,
allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Henrich said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
today. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'
