1949 AL Game: Phil. @ Det.

July 18, 1949

The Detroit Tigers put an end to their 5 game losing streak with a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics today at Briggs Stadium. Philadelphia had embarrassed Detroit the first 2 games of this series by the scores of 13-7 and 19-7. In this game the Tigers trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the 8th but rallied for 3 runs taking a 5-3 lead. The key hit was a pinch-hit, 2 out 2 run single by Don Kolloway (pictured). But the Athletics came back to tie the game at 5 all in the top of the 9th on Sam Chapman's 2 run single. Then in the bottom of the 9th, George Kell tripled, driving in the game winning run and halting the team's skid while finally giving the hometown fans something to cheer about.
