1949 AL Game; Det @ Was

See the source imageMay 17, 1949

The Detroit Tiger's Pat Mullin had a very productive day at the plate, leading the Tigers to a 13-1 drubbing of the Washington Senators. Mullin hit a bases clearing triple in the 1st inning and cleared the bases again in the 6th inning with a Grand Slam Homerun. His 7 RBI are the most by any AL player so far this season. Virgil Trucks pitched a great game, going the distance for his 5th Win of the year. The win also ended the Tiger's 3 game losing streak.

Virgil Trucks tossed a complete game as the Detroit Tigers ballclub
embarrassed the Washington Senators by the count of 13 to 1.

Pat Mullin was unconscious all evening. The Washington fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He tripled
emptying the bases in the 1st inning and launched a rocket-shot out of the
park for a Grand Slam homerun in the 6th inning. Detroit banged out 13 hits
on the night.

The winning pitcher was Trucks(5-2) who allowed 1 run for the game. Walt
Masterson(1-2) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 7
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

1949 AL Standings and League Leaders

May 16, 1949

We're into the middle of May and the New York Yankees continue to play solid, all around good baseball. They lead the AL with a 17-8 record. My Detroit Tigers just dropped a doubleheader to the St. Louis Browns, and are 1-5 against them. It's one reason why the Browns have over-performed so much this early in the season. This Tiger bullpen has got to be the worst I've ever had while managing a Detroit team. The Boston Red Sox's Ted Williams has moved into the top spot in BAvg. and RBI while trailing only New York's Tommy Henrich in HR.

1949 AL Standings and News Recap with League Leaders

May 9, 1949

Standings and League Leaders in the AL after all games played thru May 8th. The New York Yankees lead the league in runs scored and have allowed the fewest runs, the reasons' why they hold 1st place. My Detroit Tigers are in 2nd place, just 1 game behind NY. The Tigers defeated the Yankees yesterday in the first meeting between the clubs this season.
Boston's Ted Williams has been crushing the ball and leads the AL in HR (8) and RBI (23). Cleveland's Lou Boudreau leads the league in BA. St. Louis 1st baseman Jack Graham (.342/7/15) has gotten off to a fast start this year and holds a spot in the top 5 of the 3 main League Leaders hitting categories. Detroit's Virgil Trucks leads all AL pitchers in ERA and K's. He's also tied in W's with 4.

Johnny Mize cracked 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Monte Kennedy was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the New York
Giants defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 3 at Polo Grounds.

Mize enjoyed a great day at the plate. Every time he came up in the latter
innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He lofted a three-run
'big-fly' in the 1st inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 3rd inning and
smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 6th inning. New York had a total
of 9 hits for the game.

The winning pitcher was Kennedy(1-2) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Jim
Hearn(1-1) ended up with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 8 innings.

'Everything seemed to click today,' Mize said 'if it could only be this easy
all the time!'

1949 AL Standings

May 1, 1949

Standings in the AL after the opening month of the 1949 MLB season. The New York Yankees have gotten off to a good start and lead the AL early in the season. My Detroit Tigers are off to a good start too. Their pitching staff is best in the AL at this point. That's because the top 3 starters: Hal Newhouser, Virgil Trucks, and Fred Hutchinson have gone deep into their starts, and the Tigers have to hope that trend continues. The Detroit bullpen is dreadful, with the possible exception of Dizzy Trout. The Cleveland Indians have been the top offensive team in the AL.
