1949 NL Game: Brk. @ Cin.

May 22, 1949

 Brooklyn Dodger rookie pitcher Don Newcombe got his 1st MLB start today against the Cincinnati Reds. Newcombe threw a gem against the Reds, going 8 innings allowing 2 hits and no runs in Brooklyn's 1-0 victory.  He was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the 9th and that pinch hitter, Tommy Brown, drove in the game's only run with a clutch RBI single.

Don Newcombe pitched 8 strong innings at Crosley Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers
beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 1 to 0.
 
The game was decided in the 9th inning.  After an out was recorded, Roy
Campanella doubled.  Eddie Miksis was next to bat, but he was a strikeout
victim.  Tommy Brown then lashed a single, and an error was also committed,
scoring the run.  Cincinnati went down without a fight in the bottom of the
9th.  
 
The victory was credited to Newcombe(1-0) who went 8 innings, allowing no
runs. Erv Palica recorded the save, his 3rd.  The loss was charged to Eddie
Erautt(1-1).
