1949 AL Game: Det. @ Bos.

See the source imageMay 22, 1949

My Detroit Tigers visited Fenway Park for the 1st time this season for a game against the Boston Red Sox. What was expected to be a close pitching duel lived up to it's expectations.Virgil Trucks started for the Tigers and Mel Parnell got the start for the Red Sox. Parnell pitched a masterful game and Boston prevailed 1-0. The Red Sox got the game's only run in the 6th inning and it was an unearned run as a result of Tiger 1st baseman Paul Campbell's miscue. Parnell ended up with a 3-hit, complete game, shutout victory.

Mel Parnell allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard
for Detroit as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 1 to 0 at
Fenway Park.

Parnell(4-2) dominated Detroit hitters. He gave up just 3 hits and 1 walk in
9 innings improving his ERA from 2.33 to 2.00. Detroit proved to be no
trouble in the 9th.

Virgil Trucks(5-3) was charged with the loss. It was a tough loss for him as
he did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work.

'He had his 'A' game today,' Joe McCarthy said of Parnell. 'Very impressive
performance.'
