1949 to be put on hold

I was going to try to continue replaying 1949 simultaneously with the newly released 1968 season but I've decided to concentrate solely on 1968, my all time favorite Detroit Tiger season. I've really enjoyed the 1949 replay so far, but I just can't give it the attention it deserves. At this time I'm going all in with 1968: https://my1968somreplay.blogspot.com/

1949 AL Standings

June 1, 1949

The month of May is in the books for the 1949 AL season. The New York Yankees went 17-8 in May and sit in 1st place. No team has looked forward to the Yankees coming to their ballparks with New York's formidable road record of 15-4. Cleveland and Boston also played well in May and look to be top contenders for the AL Pennant along with the Yankees. My Detroit Tigers have just come off a bad losing streak, with many of their loses (2-7 overall) coming at the hands of the surprising St. Louis Browns. The Browns have scored more runs than any team in the league so far this season. But they've also given up more runs than any team. If they could solve their pitching woes the Browns could be a threat. The Chicago White Sox have hit bottom, they hope, by losing their last 11 games in a row. Chicago went a dreadful 8-20 in May, mainly due to a meager offense.

action when he delivered a base-hit. One out later, Eddie Bockman stepped up
to the plate and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run giving

just kept pounding out hits! He ripped a single scoring a run in the 6th
inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning and delivered a solo blast
in the 9th inning. New York provided plenty of action in the 1st inning
tallying 4 runs, the 6th inning which saw them score 6 runs on 4 hits and the

was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 4
and 2/3 innings.

going in recent weeks, Chicago is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record
of 9-21, worst in the league.

Russ Meyer had a strong outing as the Philadelphia Phillies destroyed the
Cincinnati Reds by a score of 10 to 0 at Crosley Field.

Philadelphia promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they
scored 2 runs on 1 hit. That was all Meyer(3-2) needed. Philadelphia banged
out 10 hits on the night.

Johnny Vander Meer(1-3) was the loser. He allowed Philadelphia 8 runs in 6
and 1/3 innings of work. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances tonight,'
Bucky Walters said. 'Meyer just was too much for our guys.'

My Detroit Tigers visited Fenway Park for the 1st time this season for a game against the Boston Red Sox. What was expected to be a close pitching duel lived up to it's expectations.Virgil Trucks started for the Tigers and Mel Parnell got the start for the Red Sox. Parnell pitched a masterful game and Boston prevailed 1-0. The Red Sox got the game's only run in the 6th inning and it was an unearned run as a result of Tiger 1st baseman Paul Campbell's miscue. Parnell ended up with a 3-hit, complete game, shutout victory.

Mel Parnell allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard
for Detroit as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 1 to 0 at
Fenway Park.

Parnell(4-2) dominated Detroit hitters. He gave up just 3 hits and 1 walk in
9 innings improving his ERA from 2.33 to 2.00. Detroit proved to be no
trouble in the 9th.

Virgil Trucks(5-3) was charged with the loss. It was a tough loss for him as
he did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work.

'He had his 'A' game today,' Joe McCarthy said of Parnell. 'Very impressive
performance.'

1949 AL Game: St. Louis @ Was.

May 21, 1949

Pitching effectively was optional in today's game between the St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators. In the highest scoring game this 1949 season, the Browns defeated the Senators 20-16 in 10 innings. The game was tied at 13 after 9 innings before St. Louis scored 7 in the 10th to seemingly wrap up a victory. But Washington scored 3 in the bottom of the 10th before the last out was finally obtained. The Brown's catcher, Sherm Lollar, 'blocked the plate' saving a run in the 3rd inning. Without that play, St. Louis would have lost the game 13-12 in 9 innings. The teams combined for 42 hits along with 21 walks and Washington committed 6 errors.
