1949 World Series Game 1

October 5, 1949

The Brooklyn Dodgers got off to a quick start in Game 1 of the 1949 World Series. Leading off the game, Pee Wee Reese tripled off New York starter Allie Reynolds. The next batter, Gene Hermanski, hit a flyball scoring Reese for 1-0 Dodger lead. But that would be the lone highlight for Brooklyn as the Yankees came roaring back, taking Game 1 by a score of 10-2. After scoring a run in the bottom of the 2nd tying the game, the Yankees put 6 runs on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The big hit was a 3 run homer by Tommy Henrich. Dodger starter Preacher Roe was chased from the game before the 3rd inning was over. Allie Reynolds ran into trouble in the 8th inning when he loaded the bases. Joe Page came in and struck out Duke Snider to end the threat and retired the side in order in the 9th to give New York the victory and 1-0 lead in the World Series.
