1949 World Series Game 3

October 7, 1949

Once again it was the visiting team scoring in the 1st inning to grab a quick lead. But this time it was the Yankees plating the 1st 2 runs of the game. Brooklyn's Duke Snider tied it up in the bottom of the 2nd with a 2 run homer off New York starter Eddie Lopat. In the top of the 3rd Joe DiMaggio hit a 2 run shot of Brooklyn starter Rex Barney for a 4-2 New York lead and the Yankees never trailed again, winning Game 3 9-2. Lopat ran into trouble in the bottom of the 7th with his team leading 6-2. Brooklyn loaded the bases, but Joe Page came on in relief and put an end to the Dodger rally. 1949 World Series Game 2

October 6, 1949

It was a slugfest in Game 2 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium today. When the dust settled it was the Brooklyn Dodgers that came out on top by a lopsided score of 17-7. Similarly to Game 1 after taking an early 3-0 lead, the Brooklyn Dodgers saw the New York Yankees come back with 4 runs in the 4th to grab a 4-3 lead. But in this game the Dodgers didn't lay down. In the 6th inning Brooklyn put 11 runs on the scoreboard. Roy Campanella hit a grand slam homerun and Pee Wee Reese added a 2-run shot in the inning. Even after pitching poorly, Don Newcombe, who was pinch hit for in the 6th, ended up with the Win for Brooklyn. Yankee ace Vic Raschi was hit hard and took the loss. The Series now moves to Brooklyn for the next 3 games tied up 1-1.

1949 World Series Game 1

October 5, 1949

The Brooklyn Dodgers got off to a quick start in Game 1 of the 1949 World Series. Leading off the game, Pee Wee Reese tripled off New York starter Allie Reynolds. The next batter, Gene Hermanski, hit a flyball scoring Reese for 1-0 Dodger lead. But that would be the lone highlight for Brooklyn as the Yankees came roaring back, taking Game 1 by a score of 10-2. After scoring a run in the bottom of the 2nd tying the game, the Yankees put 6 runs on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The big hit was a 3 run homer by Tommy Henrich. Dodger starter Preacher Roe was chased from the game before the 3rd inning was over. Allie Reynolds ran into trouble in the 8th inning when he loaded the bases. Joe Page came in and struck out Duke Snider to end the threat and retired the side in order in the 9th to give New York the victory and 1-0 lead in the World Series.

1949 World Series Preview

October 4, 1949

The 1949 MLB World Series is set to begin at Yankee Stadium in New York tomorrow. Because both teams involved are in New York, the best of 7 game Series will be played on consecutive days. Only inclement weather will give teams a day off. Here are the rosters with their final 1949 regular season stats for the AL Champion New York Yankees and the NL Champion Brooklyn Dodgers:

1949 AL Final Standings

October 3, 1949

In a closely contested race, the New York Yankees won the 1949 AL Pennant. New York, Boston, and Cleveland dueled for the title throughout the season. The race came down to the final week of the season before New York was able to put Boston behind them for good. New York won with the best pitching in the AL and some very good hitting. Boston had the best hitting in the league and 3rd best pitching. The Cleveland Indians stayed in the race with some excellent pitching (2nd best in the AL). My Detroit Tigers were a bit disappointing, under performing their actual record by 7 games. The Tigers had some very good hitting and a pretty good starting rotation. But their bullpen was terrible. If Detroit's starters didn't go the distance you could pretty much count on them losing the game.
