1949 AL Game: Phi. @ Cle.

June 5, 1949

The Cleveland Indians have been red hot as of late winning 12 games in a row. The Indians, behind the brilliant pitching of Satchel Paige (pictured) defeated the Philadelphia Athletics 2-1 in the 2nd game of a twin-bill. Cleveland took both games today and their winning streak has allowed them to move into a 1st place tie in the AL with the New York Yankees.

Satchel Paige went the distance as the sizzling Cleveland Indians defeated the
Philadelphia Athletics 2 to 1 at Municipal Stadium.

Cleveland brought 1 run across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
That was all the offense they were to need. The pitchers took over after the
3rd inning as neither team was able to score again.

Paige(4-1), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Carl
Scheib(4-4) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 5
hits and 5 walks.

1949 AL Detroit Game and other AL Game Stories

June 3, 1949

My 1st game back after resuming the 1949 asplayed replay saw my Detroit Tigers hosting the Philadelphia Athletics. The game turned into a great pitchers duel, although it didn't start off that way. Staff ace Hal Newhouser (picture left) was on the mound for Detroit and the 1st batter he faced, Eddie Joost, cleared the leftfield fence for his 8th homerun of the season. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 8th when the Tigers finally got to Philadelphia starter Alex Kellner for a run on Hoot Evers' clutch RBI single. The game went to extra innings and in the bottom of the 10th Johnny Groth (pictured right) led off by hitting a walk-off homerun. The Tigers won 2-1 and Newhouser picked up his AL leading 9th Win of the season.

beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 6 to 1.

Joe Dobson(3-3) absorbed the loss. He was unable to control the Cleveland
offense and allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.

No one has been able to stop Cleveland lately as they lengthened their winning
streak to 9 games. Boudreau was thrilled following the game -- 'We're really
on a roll now. These guys are playing their hearts out and I couldn't be
happier for them!'

Porterfield was helped out by Spec Shea who recorded his 1st save. The loss

1949 As Played Replay Resumes

It's been 8 months since my last game with the 1949 MLB season and with my 1968 Season now complete, I'm ready to resume the 1949 asplayed replay. I had to look back at my posts here and the season records in the game itself to refresh my memory of it. I'm also going to have to review some of the books, magazines, internet sites, etc., that I looked at before to get the feel of the 1949 era and actual baseball season.
